Why is a good suspension system important?

A good suspension system on any car is one that keeps the tyres on the ground. Maximising traction and enabling your car to brake, accelerate and corner as best it can. A good 4WD suspension system helps manage how well the vehicle travels over uneven surfaces, carries loads and tows.

A 4WD suspension system that is insufficient can negatively affect how much weight your vehicle can carry, how comfortable and predictable your vehicle handles and the lifespan of all your vehicles mechanical components.

What components make up a suspension system?

Leaf Springs

Leaf springs are a basic form of suspension made up of layers of steel of varying sizes sandwiched one upon the other. Leaf springs offer a large amount of support between the wheels, axles and the car’s chassis. Their biggest advantage is their ability to support large vertical loads.

Coil Springs

Most modern-day vehicles use coil springs in their suspension setups. In most coil spring suspensions, a central coil provides the bulk of force. The biggest advantage of a coil spring suspension is more capacity for flexibility and comfort.

Torsion Bars

The torsion bar is a length of steel connected at one end to the car body and at the other end to a suspension link. The bar provides spring force by twisting. One of their biggest advantages to this system is that they are adjustable.

Shock Absorbers

Shock absorbers are pump like devices that help to control the impact and rebound movement of your vehicle’s springs. Along with smoothing out bumps and vibrations, the key role of the shock absorber is to ensure that the vehicle’s tyres always remain in contact with the road surface, which ensures the safest control and braking response from your car.

Airbags

In 4WD applications, airbags are used in conjunction with the existing suspension to eliminate spring sag and provide stability to your vehicle when towing or carrying uneven loads.

How do I know if my suspension needs to be repaired or replaced?

An obvious sign is if your car is making strange noises when going over bumps or steering. Or you may difficulty keeping the car straight on the road or find your vehicle sagging when loaded with weight.

As part of regular servicing, all suspension components should be thoroughly inspected and re-checked to ensure it is tight and operated correctly. We offer free, no obligation safety inspections at NQ Springs.

What is the largest legal lift for my 4WD?

In QLD the largest maximum lift is dictated by many things.

Without additional certification a vehicle may be lifted a total of 75mm. That is a 50mm (2 inch) suspension lift and 25mm (1 inch) tyre increase.

With the approval from a certified engineer a total combined lift of 150mm (6 inch) can be achieved.

I need more weight capacity, what are my options?

A GVM upgrade increases the maximum weight allowed for a vehicle when it is fully loaded. All vehicles have their own specific GVM’s from factory and are dictated by the manufacturer. Any GVM upgrade to an already registered vehicle needs to be certified by an engineer.

An approximate increase of 10% is available for most QLD registered vehicles. However, there are more options available for certain models it is best to contact us directly for more information.
